Writing your first Kubernetes Operator

Full Talk (40 Minutes)

When you have a complex stateful application running in Kubernetes, you need a lot of domain-specific knowledge in order to deploy it, upgrade it, manage its lifecycle, monitor it, auto tune it and so on.
Operators make it easy to manage such complex applications on top of Kubernetes. They are application-specific controllers that extend the Kubernetes API to create, configure, and manage your complex application instances .

Operators have massively grown in popularity in the last year and have already been implemented by most cloud native vendors. They automate and encapsulate the complexity of the application and provide an easy configuration for the end user.
As they play such important role in Kubernetes, it's essential for us to understand what it is, how it works and when we should leverage it for our own use.

In this talk, we will start from the high level benefits and advantages of the Operator and continue diving straight into the code by running through a quick step by step creation of our first Operator.
